Stansted retains environment certificate
19 November 2008
Stansted airport has announced that it is still the largest air travel hub in the UK to hold the 'coveted' ISO14001 certification for environmental management.
Following an audit of its environmental practices by ERM Certification and Verification Services, the airport has been officially endorsed until October 2011.
Stansted first achieved ISO14001 status in 2005 and, according to head of environment Andy Jefferson, the retention of the certificate this year was the result of efforts to improve 'all aspects' of the airport's performance.
'Our environmental management is critical to the sustainability of our business and is an issue we take extremely seriously,' Mr Jefferson added.
'The assessment involved close inspection of various aspects of the operation and I'd like to say a big thank you to all the individuals and companies based at Stansted who work hard to improve their own performances, which directly impacts on the overall performance of our wider airport community.'
Environmental initiatives that have been launched at Stansted recently include the use of biomass technology in the terminal extension.
The airport also claims to be the UK leader for the percentage of passengers using public transport.
