Tokyo 'remains world culinary capital'
20 November 2008

The release of the 2009 Michelin guide to Tokyo has confirmed the city as 'the world's culinary capital', according to the Japan National Tourist Organisation.

Tokyo was awarded 36 more Michelin stars in this year's guide, bringing its total number of recognised establishments to 203 – 30 hotels and 173 restaurants.

Nine eateries in the Japanese capital now have three Michelin stars, equal with Paris, while 36 have two stars and 128 have been given the prestigious award once.

With 227 stars in all, Tokyo has reportedly been recognised by Michelin more times than any other city.

Jean-Luc Naret, director of Michelin Guides, said: 'Tokyo's gastronomy has improved and evolved in the course of the year and the rise in stars shows that.

'There is great potential in Tokyo and it can get even more stars.'

Michelin updates its guides every year by anonymously evaluating restaurants and hotels that have been included in the guide in the past as well as new establishments.

Its 2009 guide to Tokyo offers a more thorough examination of the city by including five more 'ku', or wards, of the city than were featured in the 2008 publication.
