ACI welcomes new US runways
21 November 2008

The Airports Council International (ACI) North America has welcomed the opening of new runways at three major hubs in the United States.

Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare and Seattle Tacoma international airports all saw new runways open on 20 November.

ACI North America president Greg Principato said the openings will benefit passengers but stressed that there is more work to be done to achieve further reductions in congestion.

'The new runways will help passengers by increasing capacity and decreasing congestion and delays at those airports,' he said.

'But we also need to continue our investment in airport infrastructure. These projects each took years to become a reality and airports need to gather the resources now in order to meet the predicted demand for travel in the future.'

Mr Principato went on to point out that airport traffic in the United States is expected to grow to some 1bn passengers every year by 2016.

US president George Bush recently announced that military airspace will be opened up over the coming weeks to reduce congestion and delays during the holiday period.
