Tirol open to skiers
24 November 2008

The Tirol Tourist Board has announced that many major areas in the region are now open to skiers following 'huge' snowfalls.

More than a metre of snow has fallen on resorts and villages across the Austrian Tirol, enabling the opening of the region's five glaciers as well as the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl area.

Next weekend will see St Anton, Ischgl and Seefeld, among other resorts, opening to welcome early winter visitors.

A number of developments are set to take place over the coming season that could boost tourism in the Tirol region, including the addition of new flights to Innsbruck from Gatwick with carriers including British Airways.

From December this year, the eastern ski areas of Kals and Matrei will be combined to form the region's largest skiing area, which will comprise 100km of piste and Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.

Winter holidaymakers will also be offered more accommodation options this year, with three new four-star hotels set to open in St Anton, as well as the five-star Schloss Lebenberg castle near Kitzbuhel.
