Reserving sunbeds 'to be banned on Benidorm beaches'
24 November 2008

The holiday practice of getting up early to reserve sunbeds and parasols, which is often associated with German tourists and has long proved irksome for British holidaymakers, could be banned in Benidorm, according to reports.

Government officials in the Spanish holiday hotspot are set to pass the new piece of legislation as one of a number of new by-laws this week.

Anybody caught saving spaces on loungers or reserving sunshades could be fined up to €150 (£128), Typically Spanish reports.

A number of unusual legislative changes are included in the new set of by-laws, including the possible implementation of a €150 fine for anyone caught making a sandcastle.

The same penalty could be given to a person found using Benidorm's beaches as a toilet if the new by-laws are passed by the local government.

A particularly steep fine of €750 could be given to people who go on one of the town's five beaches between the hours of midnight and 7am, while anyone fishing with a harpoon could face a penalty of €1,100.
