Seattle runway 'to cut delays by three quarters'
24 November 2008

The Port of Seattle officially unveiled the third runway at Seattle-Tacoma international airport yesterday and claimed that the new area will substantially reduce delays.

Flight hold-ups are expected to be cut from the previous average of ten minutes to 2.5 minutes.

John Creighton, Port of Seattle commission president, said the runway is a 'significant success' for the city and will bring environmental and financial benefits.

'The runway is expected to save 5m gallons of fuel for airlines and over 50,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year,' he said.

'Most importantly, it will reduce delays and save millions of dollars for airlines as well as time for passengers.'

The new runway is set to prove most useful during times of low-visibility, as the two older landing areas are too close together to handle two streams of traffic in poor weather conditions.

Seattle-Tacoma is not the only US airport to have opened a new runway this month, as Washington Dulles and Chicago O'Hare have also unveiled new developments that are set to relieve congestion.
