Lufthansa Italia launched
28 November 2008
German airline Lufthansa has announced the launch of its new Italian brand, Lufthansa Italia, which will offer direct flights from northern Italy to major European destinations from February 2009.
Lufthansa said that its new brand will combine the airline's values of 'reliability and high quality' with 'Italian flair'.
The new carrier will use an initial fleet of six aircraft to fly from the Milan and Lombardy regions to some of Europe's top business and tourism destinations, starting with Barcelona and Paris Charles de Gaulle from 2 February.
Flights to Brussels, Budapest, Bucharest and Madrid will be launched four weeks later, while London Heathrow and Lisbon will be brought into the Lufthansa Italia network with the start of the summer season in March.
Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said that the new brand will position the airline in 'an important market characterised by strong demand'.
He added: 'Milan and Lombardy rank among Europe's economically most important and strongest regions. A good route network connecting them with Europe's principal cities is essential.
'Lufthansa Italia is making this a reality and at the same time is demonstrating a clear commitment to the region.'
The new flights will use an Airbus A319 seating 138 passengers in business and economy class.
