Port Arthur wins Tasmanian tourism award
01 December 2008
The historic site of Port Arthur was named Tasmania's major tourist attraction for the ninth consecutive year at a recent awards ceremony celebrating the Australian state's travel industry.
Port Arthur is a small town and former convict settlement on the Tasman peninsula, about 60km south-east of the state capital Hobart, which boasts attractions including an open-air museum.
Stephen Large, chief executive officer of the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority, said the attraction saw record visitation in 2007-08, with more than 254,000 daytime customers and 49,400 people taking the historic ghost tour.
Michelle O'Byrne, Tasmania's parks and heritage minister, said: 'The Port Arthur Historic Site is Tasmania's iconic tourism attraction; its importance as a visitor experience has been recognised again by these major tourism awards.'
Other winners at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards included the Overland Track bushwalk, which won the Qantas award for sustainability.
The Ningenneh Tunapry exhibition, which explores the journey of Tasmanian aboriginal people and celebrates their culture, picked up the indigenous tourism award.
