'Iconic' Australian driving route opens
02 December 2008

A new driving route has been launched in Australia that is described by the Northern Territory's tourist board as 'iconic'.

The tour is based on the forthcoming Baz Luhrmann film Australia and offers visitors a first-hand experience of the scenery and characters that inspired the director.

With a recommended duration of 11 days, the route covers nearly 1,900km, stretching from Darwin, across the north-western corner of Australia to the pearling town of Broome.

Along the way, travellers can spend time in Darwin, the Kakadu national park, the outback community of Katherine, El Questro wilderness park, Home Valley Station and other locations.

People interested in taking part in some adventurous activities can embark on scenic flights over the mounds of the Bungle Bungles or Kakadu park, canoe down the Katherine River or take a 4x4 drive on the Gibb River bush track.

The film Australia, which stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, will be released in UK cinemas on Boxing Day.
