Melbourne Airport reveals new expansion
14 March 2006

Melbourne International Airport has unveiled its new 5,000 sq metre expansion.

More than doubling the existing space, the expansion has added a third level in the international terminal building and has installed two dual aerobridges to accommodate the new double-decker A380 aircraft.

New lounges for travellers flying with Qantas and Emirates have been created on the third level.

Passengers will be able to enjoy the view that the new building provides, as the expanded terminal has floor to ceiling windows providing stunning views of Mount Macedon across the airfield.

New gates and windows will allow plane enthusiasts to have an up-close look at the aircraft, with the planes' noses almost touching the windows, TravelMole reports.

Speaking at the launch of the extension, Melbourne Airport chief executive officer Chris Barlow said: "This project is the last major step in the airport's multimillion dollar apron, runway and terminal development program to accommodate continued growth in international passenger traffic and the new-generation A380 aircraft."

With the Commonwealth Games just days away and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival due to begin in April, the airport expansion could not have come at a more opportune time for the city.
