Extra cash for extra legroom
15 March 2006

Late booking passengers flying with Northwest Airlines will be able to guarantee that they are still able to get the most roomy seats under a new scheme.

The airline has announced that it has begun trialling its new Coach Choice service, which allows passengers on domestic flights to reserve a seat with a little extra legroom.

No longer left with the seats that no one else wants, passengers who would rather book late but still obtain a decent seat can now reserve a number of aisle and emergency exit seats, which could provide an extra 13 inches of space, at a premium of $15.

Northwest's vice president of passenger marketing and sales, Jim Cron, said that services such as this were vital in ensuring passenger comfort and loyalty.

"One of the issues we face today is [that] with a lot of very low leisure fares out there, airplanes are very full, the complaint we get from some customers who book close in is that most of the good seats are gone," said Mr Cron.

If successful the airline will extend the service to flights between the USA and both Canada and Mexico, and might make it available on international flights.
