Spring and splash in Bordeaux
16 March 2006
The historic city of Bordeaux is famous for its beautiful architecture, great heritage of wine and many surrounding chateaux, but in spring there are a few surprises that make a visit well worth making.
In May, the Lacanau Gliss festival is a celebration of water sports.
Events include windsurfing, surfing, kite surfing and wake boarding.
There is also the chance to get involved and try your hand at these sports if the competition inspires you.
For a more laid back Bordeaux break the Spring Fair in the Place des Quinconces gives you a more tradition view of the city.
The fair runs from April 21 to May 8th and gives you the chance to pick up some food, antiques and plants all at great prices.
From the fair exploring the city is easy and there are many great sights to see such as the Gothic Cathedrale St-Andre, which offers unparalleled panoramic views of the city, the Musee des Beaux-Arts, which holds works by Titian and Delacroix, and the Rue Sainte Catherine, claimed to be the longest shopping street in Europe.
However, the one big draw to the city has to be wine.
Hundreds of chateaux surround the city in the green countryside and many welcome visitors to come and taste the wine, and perhaps buy a bottle or two.
