British couples head abroad to marry
16 March 2006
Almost a quarter of British couples heading up the aisle in the last two years chose to do so abroad, according to new research.
A Direct Line Home Insurance survey found that that 24 per cent of couples that wed in the last two years opted to combine their wedding and honeymoon, compared with just nine per cent between 1996 and 2001.
The most popular destinations were South Africa, the Caribbean and Las Vegas, with many people choosing guaranteed sun over large family receptions.
Simon Ziviani of Direct Line said: "Affordable air fares, a sense of adventure and the drudgery of British weather mean that overseas weddings are more popular than they have ever been."
Over the last two years couples spent £1.7 billion tying the knot overseas, often seeing it as a cheaper alternative to a UK wedding.
