Walking over hot coals in Greece
17 March 2006

Each May in Greece the village of Langada near Thessaloniki holds one of the hottest ceremonies ever.

The tradition of Anastenaria dates back to pagan times and involves locals walking over hot coals.

Visitors are not invited to take the walk across the coals, but there is plenty of music and dance that goes along with the festival to make you feel part of the fun.

Local food is also available in abundance and the bonfires and candles that light up festivities make this a truly original event.

If the excitement of the festival gets a little too much for you and you feel the need to relax Langada is also home to one of Greece's many great spas.

The mineral springs of New Apollonia at Langada are located in fissures that also form the lakes Langada and Volvi, which are both well worthy visiting.

The waters are said to offer great healing properties and it is claimed they can help with the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis.
