New Berlin airport to go ahead
17 March 2006
A German court has given the go ahead to a new international airport planned for Berlin.
Work on the Brandenburg International Airport had been stopped after people living in the area complained about the noise that would be created.
However, the courts backed a £1.4 billion plan that will reduce noise.
The airport is set for completion in 2011, after being in development for nearly 15 years already, and will be an extension of the existing Schoenefeld base.
Currently the German capital has three airports, but even with the Brandenburg International in place Frankfurt will remain the country's largest hub for air travel.
It is possible that if the new airport is successful the current Tegel and Tempelhof airports could be phased out.
Qatar Airlines, Delta Airline and Continental Airlines have all already signed up to use the Brandenburg International when operations commence.
