Eat your way through Spain
21 March 2006

This May Madrid is holding an event that will have any food lover licking their lips.

The Salon Internacional del Club de Gourmets will host its 20th international fair in the Spanish capital where over 700 Spanish and international food producers come to show off their wares and over 50,000 people come to taste what is on offer.

Tickets for the public cost 6, for which you get 6 tasting coupons, and if the varied smells tempt you some more, further coupons can be bought for 1.

The fair runs from May 8th to 11th and is the first food fair of the year in Spain, so sets the culinary standards for the year.

After all the food the best way to burn off the calories is to explore the city by foot.

The best place to start a tour is the grand Royal Palace, which with around 3,000 rooms is one of the largest and most impressive palaces in Europe.

From the palace and its impressive gardens it is only a short walk to the Plaza Mayor.

The square once held bullfights, burning of heretics and crowning of kings, but wandering through the arcades that surround it and gazing up at the 17th century facades it is hard to imagine.

Exploring Madrid's marvellous galleries such as the Prado and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia will also, no doubt, help you get back into shape.
