23 March 2006
Auckland International Airport is setting out its plans for the next 20 years, after celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The airport intends to build a further runway to the north of the terminal and current runways will be widened to accommodate larger aircraft.
Arrivals facilities will also be expanded and the domestic terminal will be upgraded in the next two years.
Airport chief executive officer Don Huse, said: 'As a "world-leading airport enterprise" serving the Auckland region and New Zealand it is crucial that Auckland Airport's facilities are efficient, effective and internationally competitive.
'The objective is that Auckland Airport be developed and operated in the most efficient and effective way possible - now, and into the future.'
Recent developments at the international terminal have included the expansion of check-in facilities as well as a new upper level to the airport departures pier.
Last year 11 million passengers passed through the airport and the plan is to increase this to 24 million passengers, as New Zealand's popularity as a destination increases.
