Culture celebrated in Berlin
24 March 2006
Berlin will celebrate its multi-ethnic population this coming summer in its annual four day Carnival of Culture.
Between 2nd and 5th June, the route of the carnival's parade down Gneisenaustrausse will be transformed by brightly coloured posters and drapes.
Over 70 countries will be represented in the carnival, with groups coming to take part in the central street parade of dancers, musicians, masquerades and artists.
'It stands for an inversion of hierarchy as well as for the proud presentation of a people's identity,' the organisers, Werkstatt der Kulturen, say.
Exotic food and drink will be on offer in the square of Blücherplatz, where many different activities and stalls congregate.
Since the Carnival of Culture's beginnings in 1996, it has developed into an enormously popular event on the international calendar, with a wide variety of cultures represented through different arts in both staged events and on the street.
