San Francisco Night Fever on Qantas
30 March 2006
Saturday Night Fever star John Travolta was at San Francisco International Airport to welcome the first non-stop Qantas service from Sydney.
Travolta, a qualified pilot, was joined by mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom and the city's fire department, which gave the first arrivals a water canon salute.
The film star's own Boeing 707 was also at the airport, carrying the Qantas livery, as the airline's plane landed.
Qantas chief financial officer Peter Gregg said: 'We are initially operating three flights a week, and have plans to develop the route further over time.
'These new services take the total number of Qantas flights to the USA to 43 a week.'
The new service ups the total number of North American destinations served by Qantas to five, with San Francisco joining Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and Honolulu.
San Francisco was the first mainland US destination served by Qantas, which operated flights to the city from 1954 to 1994.
Travolta was on hand at the landing due to his role as Qantas global goodwill ambassador.
