Budget airtrips soaring
03 April 2006

Increasing numbers of people are boarding budget airline flights, according to the latest figures.

An OAG report states that globally, the number of low-cost flights has doubled in the past five years to 300,000 this month, up from 142,000 in April 2001.

Low-cost airlines now account for around 14 per cent of all flights and 17 per cent of seats worldwide.

Duncan Alexander, managing director of OAG Business Development, claims that the recent fuel cost rises have seen increasing numbers of passengers migrate to budget airlines.

"Although fuel prices obviously affect all airlines, the budget carriers have lower cost bases and, because they are generally smaller than their full-service counterparts, they can react more quickly and effectively to market trends," he said.

Although the budget market is growing, the entire airline sector is stagnant at 2.3 million flights per month.

In Europe, April is expected to see 24 per cent more budget flights than a year ago, with firms such as easyJet, Ryanair and Germanwings leading the way.
