Amex issues short break advice
03 April 2006

American Express Travel (Amex) has issued a warning to short break providers that the popularity of package deals is on the slide.

The company claims that customers are preferring to make flight and accommodation bookings separately, evidence perhaps of the increased amount of choice and knowledge that the internet has provided the consumer.

Amex states that travel agents should concentrate on the boom area of quality city hotels in good locations.

American Express Travel Europe vice-president Katrina Harrison said: "The big demand now is for quality advice on hotels with the best city centre locations.

"Customers on a two or three day break do not want to find themselves in a hotel miles from the centre and the sights that they have come to see, just to save a few pounds."

Increasing numbers of customers are being lured away from traditional top spot Paris by the low-cost flights to Eastern Europe and favourable exchange rates with the US.
