US airline complaints down

Official US figures show that complaints against airlines fell in February.

The US department of transportation's Air Travel Consumer Report shows that complaints about airline service in February fell by 33.5 per cent compared with January.

The number of lost bags also decreased with a mishandled baggage rate of 6.08 reports per 1,000 passengers in February, compared with almost seven per 1,000 in January.

However, punctuality of flights decreased slightly with an overall on-time arrival rate of 75.3 per cent in February, falling from 77.6 per cent a year ago.

The most punctual airline was Hawaiian Airlines, with 94 per cent of flights leaving on time, followed by Comair and US Airways.

Hawaiian Airlines also had the lowest number of cancellations, 0.2 per cent of flights, just beating Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

In general, there was also a higher rate of cancellations, with 2.1 per cent of scheduled domestic flights being called off.
