More flights to Russia
05 April 2006
Russia could be opened up as a new destination for short breaks as the number of flights to the country is set to rise.
A new agreement has been struck between the UK and Russian governments to allow flights to Moscow to double, as bmi will be allowed to fly routes alongside BA. - with both airlines allowed 35 flights a week.
For the extra flights to go ahead the existing 1957 pact between the two countries will have to be redrawn and replaced with a new Air Services Treaty.
Further services that could be introduced or expanded include those between Moscow and Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.
Flights could also start from London to Kaliningrad, a small part of Russia sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
Kaliningrad which was formally German - as the Prussian city of Koenigsberg - now boosts architecture and attractions that show its Soviet and German past with statues of Lenin still standing and areas of cobble stone streets and German villas.
Further destinations throughout Russia will also be opened up by the new agreement, along with Russian airspace allowing more flights to the Far East.
