Ireland to sell Aer Lingus
06 April 2006
The Irish government is to sell off most of its stake in the airline Aer Lingus.
The sale, launching the airline on the stock market, is scheduled to take place as soon as possible, although the Irish government first raised the issue over a decade ago.
Irish minister for transport Martin Cullen said: 'This is a good day for Aer Lingus staff, customers and the broader Irish economy.
'We have cleared the way for Aer Lingus to access the funding necessary to offer new routes, expand employment and offer better consumer choice.'
The Irish government will retain 25.1 per cent of Aer Lingus so it can balance the airline's commercial needs and protect the nation's strategic interests.
