Russia introduces airport lie detectors
06 April 2006

A new measure to ensure flight security in Russia will be lie detectors.

Officials at the Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport have brought in lie detector tests alongside the usual security measures, reports the Telegraph.

Tests, in a variety of languages including English, last between 30 and 90 seconds and take place while bags are x-rayed.

The Israeli technology measures psychological and emotional voice characteristics and decides whether passengers should face further questions.

At first the test will only be used for those deemed to be suspicious, asking if they are carrying weapons or drugs, but the airport expects to widen its use to cover all passengers.

Vladimir Kornilov, IT director for the airport operator, said: 'We know that this could be uncomfortable for some passengers but it is a necessary step.'

The detectors form part of a $180 million investment programme in the airport.
