Dublin to star in Austen biopic
07 April 2006

Shooting has begun in Dublin on a movie of the life of Jane Austen.

Filming of Becoming Jane has started in Dublin, taking advantage of the city's historic centre as a backdrop.

The film will star Anne Hathaway, of Brokeback Mountain fame, alongside Maggie Smith and Julie Walters to tell the story of the early life of Austen and her teenage romance with Irish rogue Tom Lefroy.

Producer Robert Bernstein told the Telegraph: 'It is young love. It is Jane Austen in love, something you've never seen before, a complete departure from the usual oblique portrait of her as a spinster.'

Many films have taken advantage of Ireland's diverse landscape and towns over the last few years including King Arthur, Saving Private Ryan, Angela's Ashes, Brave Heart and Far and Away.
