Coventry Airport terminal safe
10 April 2006
The government has decided to not pull down Coventry Airport's temporary terminal.
Warwick District Council had claimed that the airport had no planning permission for the structure but the Office for the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) ruled in favour of the airport and the terminal will stand.
The ODPM found that although the council was right over the matter, permission for the terminal to remain was granted.
The terminal, a converted cargo shed, has already been used by 1.2 million passengers but the airport is now focusing on building modern facilities that can take 2 million people a year.
Bill Savage, managing director of Coventry Airport, said at a press conference: 'We see this as a very strong confirmation that passenger operations at Coventry Airport are supported by the government.
'Although we welcome this support we now need to concentrate on the current planning inquiry to seek approval for a new terminal building to replace the IPF [interim passenger facilities], increase passenger service levels and provide an appropriate facility that has tremendous support from the vast majority of Coventry and Warwickshire residents and businesses.'
