1.2m head to the slopes
13 April 2006
Last year 1.23 million people hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding.
Ski Club of Great Britain's 2005 Snowsports Analysis shows there has been an 11.5 per cent increase in the number of people taking part in snow sports over the last five years.
Fiona Sweetman, of the Ski Club of Great Britain, said 'We are not surprised that the snowsports market in the UK is thriving.
'There is a real positive feel in the industry at present and with the great end of season snow in Europe and North America this season looks likely to be just as good if not better than 2004/5!'
The growth is in part down to the number of people taking advantage of new affordable air routes as well as smaller independent firms offering more flexible breaks.
The most popular destination was France with 42 per cent of skiers and snowboarders heading to Gallic slopes.
Italy, Austrian and Switzerland also maintained their popularity.
Bulgaria was noted for its growth, as more people head there to find new slopes.
