Gatwick flies record number of passengers
13 April 2006
Gatwick Airport enjoyed its busiest year on record during the past year, according to BAA.
The airport welcomed 32.8 million passengers though its sliding doors during the past 12 months, 2.6 per cent up on the previous year.
The impressive figures were despite a 0.1 per cent decrease in the figures for March, blamed on the late timing of Easter.
BAA's seven UK airports were up 2.0 per cent in passenger numbers at 11.4 million, although flagship Heathrow, which is currently in the process of building a fifth terminal, suffered a reduction of 0.3 per cent.
BAA blamed the airport's downturn on a number of factors including customer concern following the London bombings in July, higher oil prices, the Gate Gourmet dispute as well as a general softening of the UK's economy.
The company's third London airport, Stansted, enjoyed a rise of five per cent in passenger numbers for the year to 22.2 million.
