Minneapolis Airport expansion delayed
18 April 2006
The planed expansion of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is to be delayed by at least another two years, according to the Associated Press.
Construction of 12 new gates at the Humphrey terminal is now expected to begin in 2008, with the first passengers using them in 2010, after the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) decided to remove funding for the project from the capital budgets for the next two years.
The construction of the new gates is expected to be the first phase of a 15-year project at the airport.
The gates, which will bring the terminal's number up to 22, had originally been intended to open next year.
The project is intended to eventually see all airlines not affiliated with Northwest Airlines use the Humphrey terminal, with Northwest and its partners getting sole use of the Lindbergh terminal, which is set to have its gate numbers increased to 153.
The plans have been hampered by Northwest's recent bankruptcy, which has seen MAC predict aircraft use of the airport to drop between ten and 14 per cent this year.
