Warning issued for travel to Solomon Islands
19 April 2006
The federal government in Australia has warned holidaymakers against travelling to the Solomon Islands after unrest broke out there on Tuesday.
The capital Honuria has experienced a day of tumultuousness following the election of Snyder Rini as the nation's new prime minister following an election that protestors claim was rigged.
The Australian department of foreign affairs and trade has already moved to discourage Australian citizens from travelling there, with the release of a new travel advisory.
The advisory explains: "We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Solomon Islands at this time because of continuing significant civil unrest in Honiara following the announcement on April 18th of the results of the recent prime ministerial elections."
It adds: "If you decide to travel to Solomon Islands, you should exercise extreme caution. Monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks."
The advisory warns tourists to avoid the city centre, eastern Honiara and Chinatown areas in particular, as it is there that the protests deteriorated overnight into looting and violence.
The Australian government has also requested that citizens either in or about to travel to the Solomon Islands register their contact and travel details in the advent of an emergency.
