Virgin celebrates 20 years of flying to Miami
21 April 2006
Virgin Atlantic is celebrating the 20th anniversary of flights to Miami.
Since the first flight in 1986 - as Virgin's second route the airline has carried four million passengers to Florida, covering 51.5 million miles.
Sir Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Atlantic, said: 'It is hard to believe that we are celebrating another milestone in Virgin Atlantic's history, when we first launched the airline in 1984 it was a dream that we would one day be one of Britains major airlines, that dream is now a reality.
'Miami is such an important route for Virgin Atlantic as there is so much history - you could say it was one of the routes which launched us as a world class international carrier.'
During the two decades of flights to the Sunshine State, Virgin has served four million meals and 132,000 bottles of champagne. The millionth glass of bubbly is expected to be served before the airline reaches its 25th anniversary of the route.
Virgin Atlantic now flies to 26 destinations and claims to have one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in the world.
