Blackpool in line to be top of Europe
21 April 2006
Improvements to Blackpoll International Airport (BIA) could lead it to be one of the fastest growing regional airports in Europe.
Over the last year the airport has seen a 42 per cent increase in passengers with 377,035 people flying from Blackpool.
BIA business development manager Gareth Kennedy told the Blackpool Gazette: 'This year we expect passenger numbers to reach 750,000 and that is based on the number of flights we already have and new ones starting later this year so we can be confident of achieving that.'
In March the airport's new £2 million Squire Gates terminal opened with capacity for one million travellers a year a far cry from when it first opened in 1909 as an airfield for a flying school.
By the end of the year the airport hopes to have 15 commercial flights departing daily.
