Travel advice for football fans
24 April 2006
Football fans heading to this summer's World Cup will be able to receive travel advice from a desktop character based on former footballer Alan Brazil.
The animated caricature will brief fans in Germany on potential transport problems while the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's (FCO's) Avoiding Penalties campaign offers further general travel reminders.
Where to stay and watch matches without a ticket, together with recommendations about the best entry methods for individual stadiums, are combined with more general information about travel and medical insurance on the FCO website.
'I hope that the England fans will take the Foreign Office advice both when planning their trip and once they're out in Germany,' said former England captain David Platt, who supported the opening of the Awarding Penalties campaign.
'Just knowing they've prepared properly and have the right information to hand should something go wrong will mean they can concentrate on what's important and that's supporting our team.'
An information card containing important emergency numbers including a 24-hour hotline, mobile internet travel advice service, and the FCO website all contribute to the government's efforts to facilitate the smooth passage of England fans to and from the tournament.
