Bahrain airport set for redesign
25 April 2006

Bahrain International Airport is set to receive $300 million for redevelopment.

The redesign will help to bring the number of passengers that annually use Bahrain to 12 million by 2015 and eventually to 45 million a year.

Work to double the airport's size will commence this year with a major extension to the passenger terminal, new surfaces to runways and new parking facilities.

Captain Abdul Rahman Al Gaoud, of the Bahraini Civil Aviation Authority, said: 'All of these projects will continue to maintain our airport with one of the most modern and state-of-the-art facilities in the Middle East.'

The growing popularity of Bahrain - situated off the east coast of Saudi Arabia - over the last few years has been in part been fuelled by the establishment of a grand prix on the island state and the growth of tourism in the Arabian Gulf in general.
