Sand Mozart
26 April 2006

The beaches of the French resort Cap D'Agde become an art gallery each June for the Sand Sculpture Festival.

The festival runs from 3 to 5 June and this year the theme will be Mozart to commemorate the composer's 250th birthday.

Sculptors are only allowed to use sand, water and materials washed up on the beach for their creations but over the four previous festivals they have made a series of sculptures that have stunned crowds.

The musical theme will not only include the sand but also there will be a classical music concert on the beach among the sculptures.

For those inspired by the festival, there is also a competition for families.

Cap D'Agde is the beach resort near the town of Agde, on the Mediterranean coast near Montpellier.

The area is famed for its nudist colonies, but the town itself - originally founded by Greeks - offers a historic centre with the Cathedral St Etienne, built in black volcanic rock, and a waterfront with numerous restaurants specialising in seafood.
