Iberia to go low-cost
26 April 2006
Iberia is to invest 24 million establishing a new low cost airline.
The Spanish airline will work alongside four other companies - including the travel group Iberostar and Nefinsa, owner of Air Nostrum - for the new low cost carrier that will be based in Barcelona.
Initially, the new airline which is yet to be named will have five planes, although this is expected to rise to 30 by 2008. It will be formally launched later this year.
The low cost airline will be a new direction for Iberia, which mainly flies between Europe and South America.
Iberia has also announced a 30 million investment in refitting its Airbus A320 fleet.
New interiors with leather seats designed to optimise the use of space will be introduced with greater legroom.
