Air France and Qantas up fuel surcharges
26 April 2006

In response to massive hikes in fuel costs Air France and Qantas have both decided to increase fuel surcharges.

Air France will increase its fuel surcharge by 7 per segment on long haul flights. The charge on domestic and medium-haul routes will remain unchanged.

A spokesman for the airline said the increase was 'Due to the steep rise in oil prices'.

He added: 'This increase will be withdrawn as soon as the price of the barrel drops below 60 dollars for 30 consecutive days.'

Qantas has made a similar move with increases to international and domestic flights.

Qantas and Australian Airlines International services will face a AU$23 (£10) increase to AU$98 (£41).

John Borghetti, Qantas executive general manager, explained that fuel increases were a matter of concern for the whole airline industry.

He said: 'We introduced our first fuel surcharges in May 2004, when crude oil was trading at US$40 a barrel.

'Since then, oil prices have nearly doubled and the benchmark Singapore jet fuel price has increased from US$44 a barrel to more than US$88 a barrel.'
