Stansted pushes for more flights
27 April 2006

Stansted is pushing for 23,000 more flights a year.

The airport is applying for the right to have 63 more flights a day bringing its limits to 264,000 flights a year.

Nick Barton, Stansted's business development and planning director, said about the application: 'Today is an important day for Stansted and is the culmination of two years of extensive and wide-ranging studies and consultation on our proposals.'

If the application is granted it could see 35 million passengers using the airport each year, making Stansted the busiest single-runway airport in the world.

BAA, which runs the airport, expects passenger numbers to hit 25 million by 2008.

The airport is also set to apply to build a second runway later this year, costing around £2.7 billion.
