Dublin gets thumbs up for new runway
28 April 2006
Dublin Airport has been given permission to build a new runway.
Fingal County Council planning department granted permission for the construction of the runway after first receiving propsals in 1972.
The Dublin's fourth runway will eventually replace the airport's shortest one that will be lost during new development.
It is hoped eventually the airport will by able to handle 30 million passengers a year. Last year there were 18.5 million passengers.
The traveller numbers are set to increase this summer as Dublin Airport predicts for the first time ever two million passengers will travel through the airport in July and August alone.
The rise in passengers, due to 34 new services, has led the airport authorities to draw up new plans to deal with any unforeseen disruptions, including a marquee to give people somewhere sheltered to wait.
Dublin Airport director Robert Hilliard said: 'Previously, the Airport had sufficient terminal capacity to cater for any disruption that might occur to airline schedules.
'However, with no extra terminal capacity available this summer, the huge growth in passenger traffic suggests that any major disruption to airline schedules is likely to lead to additional congestion within the terminal building.'
