Check football passports to Germany
28 April 2006
Football fans are being advised to check their passports now before heading to Germany for the World Cup.
With thousands of fans heading to the tournament that will kick off on 9 June, the government is warning people to check that their passports are not going to be out of date now so they do not miss any action.
Home Office minister Andy Burnham said: 'This is not an occasion where extra-time will be played. If you do not have a valid passport you won't be able to travel, and the last thing we want is for fans to miss out on the biggest sporting event of the year.
'We are urging all England supporters to check now that their passports are fully up to date and ensure they leave enough time to apply for new documents before travelling.'
Exact numbers of those intending to go to Germany are not clear but it is estimated 80,000 fans made their way to Portugal for Euro 2004 and 15,000 made the longer trip to Korea and Japan for the last World Cup.
England's campaign starts on 10 June in Frankfurt against Paraguay, before games in Nuremberg and Cologne against Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden.
The final will take place in Berlin, after 63 matches, on 9 July.
