Jamaica breaks records

Last year Jamaica had its highest number of tourists ever.
Figures from the Jamaican Tourism Department show there was a 12.5 per cent increase in the number of travellers heading to the island, despite the negative effect of the hurricanes that hit the Gulf of Mexico.
Seventy per cent of those heading to Jamaica were from the US, while a quarter came from Europe, with many stopping off on cruises.
In total 1.5 million tourists had stopover visits on the island last year.
The most popular places to visit were Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril.
The growth of tourism is of great importance to the island as it represents the main industry with visitors spending around £840 million last year.
Visitor figures so far this year are also looking positive, with increases in January and February of 12 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.
