Glorious Arizona mud
05 May 2006

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Arizona's dirtiest festival, Mighty Mud Mania.

Whatever the weather on 4 August, the city of Scottsdale will be welcoming families to its specially created mud pits at the Chaparral Aquatic Centre.

Mud is laid on for children of all ages, from the covered puddle pools and mini mud courses for toddlers to a mud obstacle course for older children and adults, with prizes for the fastest.

The obstacle course includes waist-deep mud pits, tunnels and rope swings.

Visitors feeling creative can also make mud sculptures or old-fashioned mud pies.

Entrance is free, but the organisers ask that people bring a can of food for a local charity's food bank.

Scottsdale, in the centre of Arizona, is often used as a base for families exploring the state's many attractions that include the Grand Canyon, deserts and forests.

Choosing to live the life of the Wild West, visitors can enrol at the Arizona Cowboy College or stay on a ranch and learn how to bring the cattle in and ride through the plains.
