Paris celebrates Mozart in the open air
10 May 2006

This summer visitors to Paris will be able to enjoy one of Mozart's most famous operas in the open air.

As a part of the city's celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, the Operas En Plein Air company will be putting on The Magic Flute.

Performances in the gardens of the French senate - Jardin du Senat - in Paris's 6th arrondissement take place 14 to 17 June.

Further performances will take place in Sceaux, in the southern suburbs of Paris from 29 June to 1 July, and in the grounds of the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte, south-east of Paris in Seine-et-Marne, from 7 to 10 September.

The performances not only show off the opera but some of the grand chateaux that France is famous for.

The Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte over summer welcomes visitors on Saturday evenings to enjoy its gardens by candlelight - with over 2,000 being lit and throwing a new light over the chateau.

Around Paris there are three main chateaux of interest; the Chateau de Versailles and Fontainebleau, both well known as France's royal palaces, and the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte.
