Tom and Katie on mission to Aberdeen
11 May 2006

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were swamped by crowds on a visit to Aberdeen this week.

The couple headed not to Scotland, but to Aberdeen, Washington, where they were welcomed by crowds and were sworn in as honorary Aberdeen citizens by the mayor.

They made the trip to the town near Seattle after one resident won a competition to have a private screening of Cruise's new film with the star.

The coastal town of Aberdeen is most famous for being the home of Kurt Cobain, making it known as the birthplace of grunge.

It is also known as the Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula. The peninsula is home to a series of lakes, national parks and coastal reserves.

The Olympic National Park contains diverse landscapes, including beaches, forests and mountains including the glacier-capped Mount Olympus, which is visible from Seattle.

Being within easy reach of Seattle, visitors to the city use the nature and small towns as a chance to see a part of America not usually on tourists' agendas.
