Air Berlin opens two new routes
12 May 2006

Air Berlin began operating two new routes from London's Stansted airport earlier this week

The low-cost carrier enjoyed its first flight to the Spanish resort of Alicante on Monday, which came complete with traditional Spanish food and music, followed by Belfast City airport on the Tuesday.

Europe's third-largest low-cost airline also flies to Manchester and Glasgow from Stansted as well as to seven German destinations.

The firm also offers flights from Stansted to Palma in Majorca, from where it provides connections to 16 other cities on the Iberian peninsula.

'The new Alicante and Belfast routes mark an exciting time for our airline. We have decided to increase our commitment to the UK market as we found that British passengers responded enthusiastically to the Air Berlin low-cost high-quality model,' commented the firm's chief executive Joachim Hunold.

Stansted is fast becoming a major player in the airline industry and is currently the UK's third largest airport after Heathrow and Gatwick, carrying over 23m passengers a year.
