Frankfurt airport sees record passenger numbers
12 May 2006

Frankfurt airport saw record numbers of passengers last month, according to its owners.

Fraport AG, which owns six airports globally, said 4,387,496 passengers passed through the airport's sliding doors last month, up 3.1% on a year earlier and a record for April.

European flights, which rose by 7.5% in the month, were the main impetus behind the improvements, with Spanish destinations rising by over 20%.

'April brought a fresh breeze to Frankfurt Airport following the unusually long and harsh winter weather that affected traffic figures well into March,' the firm said in a statement.

The company added that the forthcoming World Cup in Germany, which includes five matches in Frankfurt, will see sales and profits rise.

An extra 400,000 passengers are expected in June, which chief executive Wilhelm Bender predicts will see profits improve by one per cent.

'These passengers will probably spend more time hanging out in the airport than the normal business traveller, and that means they'll shop, so we're expecting higher income from retail business,' he told Bloomberg.
