Tourists turn from agents to internet

Increasing numbers of holidaymakers are booking their long and short term breaks via the internet, according to new research.
A study has found that half of flights and holidays from travel agents are now booked online, up from 30 per cent a year ago.
It is believed that increasing numbers of people are using the internet to design their own itineraries rather than settling for package deals as many have done in the past.
"Travel websites are effectively becoming virtual agents. The days when people picked a holiday from a brochure and walked into a travel agent to book are over," commented Miles Morgan, of Thompson that was behind the research.
He added that the online arms of traditional travel agents are now becoming increasingly popular and that there is now more choice for travellers wanting to shop around the net.
