Sea and summer celebrated in Normandy
22 May 2006

The Normandy town of Fecamp celebrates the sea and summer with its Fete de la Mer et de la Musique.

From 16 to 18 June the town centre is home to song and dance and the harbour welcomes boats from around Europe.

Originally the town held two separate festivals one to celebrate the summer solstice with song, cider and shanties throughout the town and one in July where sailing was the centre of activities and festivities took place on the beach.

However, it was decided to merge the two festivals. Now processions from the town's cathedral lead the way to the beach and concerts take place at both venues.

Throughout the weekend there will be sailing lessons, a pirate village for buccaneers of all ages and a market selling fresh seafood and local crafts.

The Benedictine monastery in the town also produces a herbal liqueur brandy, which will be in plentiful supply during the festival along with locally made wine and cider.

Fecamp is situated between Le Havre and Dieppe and is within easy reach of the historic city Rouen.
