Jazz by the lake
26 May 2006

Each year the Swiss town of Montreux welcomes thousands of music fans for its annual jazz festival.

The 40th Montreux Jazz Festival takes place 30 June to 15 July with 220,000 visitors enjoying around 250 different bands at venues and free open air concerts around the town.

The definition of jazz at the festival is quite loose with artists such as Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Mogwai, The Black Eyed Peas, Massive Attack and Gnarls Barkley lining up with more traditional jazz groups.

Montreux is situated on the north shore of Lake Geneva on what is described as the Swiss Riviera. The picturesque town attracts tourists from around the world and many of the world's richest people own properties in the area.

Despite this, the town's rock and roll standing is not diminished, as on the lakefront stands a statue of Freddie Mercury as Queen recorded many of their albums in the area - and the Deep Purple rock classic Smoke on the Water is about a fire caused by a Frank Zappa fan at the Montreux casino.
